USA Travel Budget: How Much Does a 7-Day Trip Cost?

Daniel Brooks

A mid-range USA travel budget for a 7-day trip is about $2,340 to $3,000 per person in the sample routes below. International flights, entry documents, and travel insurance cost extra.

To travel the USA on a budget, start with the city and your hotel dates, because they change the bill far more than your phone plan does.

We checked official fees and phone-plan prices on October 6, 2026, and the hotel and transport amounts are examples. Neusuli sells travel eSIMs, including the USA plans in this guide.

How much does a week in the USA cost?

Each example covers 7 days and 6 hotel nights, with hotel, food, local transport, activities and mobile data, plus a 10% reserve for surprises. Swap in real prices for your dates before you book, because these are not booking quotes or a national average.

Travel styleApproximate cost per personWhat the examples assume
Budget$980 to $1,340Lower hotel and meal allowances, fewer paid activities
Mid-range$2,340 to $3,000More room in the hotel, food and activity budget
Luxury$6,060 to $7,560Higher room and dining allowances, more paid activities

The low end only works if you find a hotel inside that budget, and a holiday week or a big event can push room prices higher. Luxury has no real ceiling, so the top number is just our example.

Couples can split the room and car first, then add each person's meals and tickets, while solo travelers pay the full room cost. The Orlando example is a family of 4 in 2 rooms, so look at the family total too.

Why fixed costs matter on a short trip

Some costs grow with each day you stay, while others, like an entry application or a park pass, stay the same for 7 days or 10. Flights are a big fixed cost too, but we left them out of these examples.

Say fixed costs are $300 and daily costs are $200 per person, with the same route and daily spending in both rows.

LengthFixed costsDaily costsTotalAverage per dayFixed share
7 days$300$200 per day$1,700$242.8617.6%
10 days$300$200 per day$2,300$230.0013.0%

In this example the short trip costs $12.86 more per day but less in total. That gap can flip if you change cities, add a flight or pick another hotel, so a longer trip is only cheaper per day when everything else matches.

Which costs more: New York, California or Orlando?

Our mid-range tier is $2,340.80 per person in New York, $2,624.05 in California, and $2,992.55 in Orlando. The gap comes from the whole trip, since Orlando includes theme parks and California includes a shared rental car.

Bar chart of mid-range per-person budgets for New York, California and Orlando
Source: Neusuli route model, with the reserve included, group costs shared equally and prices checked October 2026.

If a cheaper hotel is farther out, add the extra transport to its room price before you compare. Check the trip at the times you will actually travel, since late-night rides home can wipe out the savings.

Three sample budgets you can recalculate

In the tables below, hotel and car rental amounts include required taxes and fees, and meal amounts include tax and tips. Optional cover and drop-off fees have their own line, and all of these amounts are targets to raise if your quotes come in higher.

We read Budget Your Trip's calculation method and its city pages, but its categories use different samples, so they don't add up to its daily average. Our bills use our own stated amounts and our own math.

New York City: a couple without a car

Two adults share a room for 6 nights, with an all-in room budget of $150, $400 or $1,200 a night per tier and food at $40, $85 or $200 per person per day.

Group spending (USD)BudgetMid-rangeLuxury
Hotel: 6 nights$900.00$2,400.00$7,200.00
Food: 7 days$560.00$1,190.00$2,800.00

Group total$1,953.60$4,681.60$12,887.60
Equal share per person$976.80$2,340.80$6,443.80

Every row except the last one is for the couple, and transport assumes each person hits the MTA's $35 weekly cap plus JFK AirTrain at $8.75 each way. Tap the same card or phone for every subway and bus ride, and note that AirTrain fares don't count toward the cap.

The attraction and "other" lines are allowances, not the price of a set tour. Look at the city's reported travel spending for context, then swap in the tickets you actually want. You don't need a car on this route; it would only add a parking bill.

California: Los Angeles and San Francisco with a car

Two adults spend 3 nights in LA and 3 in San Francisco, with meals for 4 days in LA and 3 in San Francisco. There's time to drive between the cities, but no national park side trip.

All-in room budgets per night are $120/$320/$900 in LA and $125/$300/$750 in San Francisco. Daily meals per person are $40/$105/$280 in LA and $32/$80/$190 in San Francisco.

All the car amounts are estimates because we didn't get a live rental quote for a real driver and date. Before you lock in the car total, check the mileage rules, optional cover and exact return location. The drop-off and cover line may be too low for your booking.

We based the hotel and food tiers on LA spending data and San Francisco spending data. You could also do the city days by transit, since LA Metro's base fare is $1.75, with an $18 cap over 7 days. Price the trip between cities and the airport rides first, and only then decide whether skipping the car saves money.

Orlando: a family with theme park days

The family of 2 adults and 2 kids aged 10 or older makes 4 travelers in 2 hotel rooms for 6 nights. One bigger room could cost less, so ask the hotel how many people the room allows and what beds it has.

Each room has an all-in nightly budget of $140/$360/$1,000, and meals are $40/$110/$350 per person per day, with kids on the same meal budget as adults.

Group spending (USD)BudgetMid-rangeLuxury
Hotel: 2 rooms × 6 nights$1,680.00$4,320.00$12,000.00

Equal share per person$1,337.05$2,992.55$7,560.30

The three tiers include 2, 3, and 4 park days, with tickets budgeted at $170/$190/$220 per person per park day, tax included. Change them as you like, since these are our estimates and not Disney quotes.

Disney lists standard one-day tickets from $119 before tax for ages 10+, and the price changes with the park and the date. Check the full price of a multi-day ticket, because multiplying the starting price won't give you the right total. Orlando's reported spending also shows why park days need their own line.

How much do hotels, food and transport cost?

How much should you budget for hotels?

Count the nights you'll really use, because if you arrive late you may still pay for that whole night. Our mid-range hotel totals come to $2,400 for the New York couple, $1,860 for the California couple and $4,320 for the Orlando family.

New York hotel taxes are usually 14.75% plus $3.50 per room per night on normal room rates. Check the final booking breakdown, because the rules depend on the room type, but don't add tax to our hotel lines, which already include it.

How much is food per day in the USA?

Our mid-range meal totals are $1,190 for the New York couple, $1,320 for the California couple and $3,080 for the Orlando family. Change the daily amount to fit how you eat, whether that's groceries, takeout or sit-down meals. Free hotel breakfast helps, but compare the full room price before you pay extra for it.

How should you budget for transport and attractions?

Separate airport rides from everyday city trips, and on a road trip, add parking costs when comparing hotels. Also check that your rental quote covers the place you'll drop the car, and give a domestic flight, a checked bag or an extra night their own line.

Pick your paid attractions first, then set the budget and fill gaps with free options. Smithsonian museums generally have free admission, except Cooper Hewitt in New York, though some places need a free timed pass.

How much to tip in the USA, and how sales tax adds up

Emily Post's guide suggests 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill at sit-down restaurants. Check for a service charge before you tip. Don't just tap the percentage the card machine suggests; read the receipt instead.

Common restaurant, housekeeping and taxi tipping ranges in the USA
Source: Emily Post Institute, checked October 2026, showing common habits rather than a fee on every purchase.

For example, a $40 dinner in New York becomes $51.55 with 8.875% sales tax and an $8 tip. Eat like that every day and tax plus tips add $80.85 over the week, which our route food budgets already include.

Sales tax depends on where you are and what you buy, and New York's 8.875% combined rate is one example, not a national rate. Check each final bill instead of using one rate for everything.

How much do ESTA, visas and park passes cost?

ESTA and tourist visas

CBP lists the ESTA fee as $40.27, and whether you qualify depends on your passport and situation. An ESTA usually lasts 2 years, or until your passport expires if that comes first. If you already have one, check that it's still valid before you budget for a new one.

Visitor visa applicants pay the State Department's $185 application fee for B visas. Some nationalities also pay an issuance fee, and a 2025 law added a $250 visa integrity fee. Your embassy's payment notice shows which fees apply to you, so the $185 may not be your full cost.

National park fees for non-residents

NPS lists an extra $100 per non-US resident aged 16 or older at 11 named parks, on top of the normal entrance fee. The non-resident America the Beautiful annual pass costs $250.

NPS page showing the non-resident annual pass price of 250 US dollars
Source: National Park Service public fee page, captured October 6, 2026.

Where parks charge per vehicle, the pass covers everyone in your car, and where they charge per person, it covers you and up to 3 other adults. You may still pay reservation fees and other charges.

Yosemite's normal private-vehicle entrance is $35, so 2 non-resident adults pay $235, less than the $250 pass. With 3 adults the bill is $335 and the pass saves $85, so count your travelers and parks before you buy. Park costs aren't included in our city routes.

How to find cheaper travel dates

Prices change with the city, the season and local events, and no reliable nationwide figure shows one cheapest month. Compare the same trip on nearby dates instead, with the same hotel, room type and cancellation terms, and the same rental location and car class. If you're visiting a park, check the full ticket calendar, then pick the cheapest dates that still give you the weather and plans you want.

Which extra costs do travelers often miss?

Watch for bags, airport transfers, parking, tolls, rental car add-ons, ATM fees and optional hotel services. Hotels and rental desks may also put a hold on your card that you usually get back. Because you need that money free during the trip, write it down separately from your spending.

Under the FTC's fee rule, effective May 12, 2025, US hotel ads must include required fees. Taxes and some optional charges can still be listed apart, so check the final total before you pay and don't add a resort fee twice if it's already included.

How much does phone data cost for a week in the USA?

Home-carrier roaming is usually a daily or weekly add-on on top of your monthly bill, while a travel eSIM is a one-off price for data. Check what your home plan already includes, then compare the total for your week.

The carrier prices below are in each carrier's own currency, and each pass includes different data and calling.

Neusuli plans for a short US trip

Our USA eSIM is data only and comes in two kinds of plan:

  • Fixed data: one total amount of data for the whole plan.
  • Daily: a set amount of high-speed data each day, after which speeds slow down until the next day.

Pick enough data for how you use your phone, and compare the total price, not just the number of days.

A 30-day plan doesn't mean you have to stay 30 days. Our route budgets use the 5GB plan at $5.50 per phone, so change that line to match how much data you expect to use.

Plans run on local US operators' networks, and the plan page lists the hotspot rules and setup steps to check before you buy.

Data only: what about a US phone number?

These eSIMs don't come with a US number, calls or SMS, but you can still call and message through apps over data.

If your bank sends codes to your home number, check your home carrier's roaming and SMS rules and keep that line switched on. Turn off data roaming on your home line while using the travel eSIM for data.

Some services need a local phone number, and an app call won't work for them, so check this before you choose a data-only plan.

Which countries and phones the plan works with

Because the US plan works in the United States only, look at the United States and Canada eSIM for a trip that also takes in Canada. If you're adding Mexico, check the North America eSIM and its country list.

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Our travel eSIM preparation checklist helps you check your phone and get set up before you fly, using the steps for the plan you buy.

How to travel the USA on a budget

  • Compare hotels by the full stay price, since a room that's $50 cheaper a night saves a group $300 over 6 nights, as long as you add any extra transport.
  • Plan your meals out, because spending $10 less per person per day saves a couple $140 a week. Check real menus to see if that works.
  • Skip the car in New York, use the weekly transit cap where it applies, and price taxis and airport rides separately.
  • Check park ticket prices before you book flights, and compare multi-day tickets with the parks you actually want to visit.
  • Mix paid sights with free ones, and book free timed tickets early so you don't miss them.
  • Check what the hotel includes, since breakfast and parking can be worth a higher room rate. Compare that with buying them separately.
  • Check your roaming plan first, because if the US is already included, you may not need another plan.
  • Keep your budget up to date, and if a quote goes over its line, cut something else or raise the total before you book.

USA travel budget FAQs

What is a good budget for a trip to the USA?

For the routes in this guide, mid-range comes to about $2,340 to $3,000 per person for the week, plus flights, entry documents and insurance. Pick the route closest to yours, then swap in your own hotel and transport quotes. If parents pay for everyone, the family total is more useful than the per-person share.

How much is food per day in the USA?

Our sample routes show that food costs $32 to $40 per person per day on a budget, $80 to $110 mid-range, and $190 to $350 for luxury, with tax and tips included. Your own number depends on how often you eat sit-down meals, and New York mid-range sits at $85 a day.

How much is a hotel per night in the USA?

Our sample budgets use $120 to $150 a night for a budget room, $300 to $400 for a mid-range room, and $750 to $1,200 for a luxury room. Taxes and required fees are included in these amounts. New York sits at the top of each range, and prices jump on holiday weeks and big event dates, so check your own dates.

How does a longer trip change the daily budget?

A longer stay spreads the fixed costs over more days, if daily spending stays the same. The example above shows the math rather than a price for a different route, and extra cities, car days and tickets need their own numbers.

How much should tourists tip in the USA?

At sit-down restaurants, Emily Post suggests 15% to 20% of the bill before tax, but check whether a service charge is already on it. The tipping chart above covers other common cases, such as housekeeping and taxis.

How much is ESTA now?

The official CBP payment page lists a fee of $40.27, checked October 2026. Apply only through the official site after checking that you qualify. If you need a visa instead, follow the visa fee steps.

How much is data roaming in the USA?

It depends on your home plan. Telstra's International Day Pass is AU$10 a day, or AU$70 for 7 charged days, and Rogers sells a CA$50 US weekly pass. Our USA eSIM with 2GB of high-speed data a day costs US$17.10 for 7 days. It is data only, so keep your home line if you need your number for calls or texts.
